The engine control modules (ECM) of a vehicle set the P2000 fault code when an issue is detected with the NOx (nitrogen oxides) trap. This device, located downstream of the engine's exhaust manifold, converts harmful nitrogen oxides into harmless nitrogen before releasing them into the exhaust system. The ECM sets code P2000 when the efficiency readings of the NOx trap exceed the emission threshold for bank 1, as defined by emission standards. The check engine light will illuminate to alert the driver to this issue.
This code is standard across most automotive brands, including Kia, Ford, Renault, Nissan, Skoda, Toyota, BMW, VW, and others.
