This general diagnostic powertrain code typically applies to all OBD-II vehicles equipped with a variable valve timing (VVT) or camshaft adjustment system. These vehicles may include Subaru, Dodge, VW, Audi, Jeep, GMC, Chevrolet, Saturn, Chrysler, Ford, BMW, Chery, and others, but are not limited to them. While the code is universal, specific repair steps may vary depending on the make and model.
Many modern vehicles utilize VVT systems to enhance engine performance and improve fuel efficiency. In these systems, the powertrain control module (PCM) operates oil control valves using solenoids to direct oil pressure to actuators located between the camshaft and timing chain sprocket. The actuator adjusts the angular position or phase of the camshaft. A camshaft position sensor monitors the position of the camshaft.
A slow response camshaft position code is triggered when the actual camshaft position fails to align with the PCM's intended position during phase adjustment. The "A" in the code refers to the intake, left, or front camshaft, while "B" refers to the exhaust, right, or rear camshaft. Bank 1 refers to the side of the engine containing cylinder #1, whereas Bank 2 is the opposite side. For inline or straight engines, there is only one bank.
